Ultra-Flat Ultrasonic Sensors Maximise Performance
The latest addition to the extensive and award-winning range of BAUMER Ultrasonic
sensors is the UF200, a fast, ultra-flat and highly adaptive ultrasonic sensor.
The design of this new sensor is another
example of how Baumer continues to
move the boundaries in terms of what is
feasible in object detection and distance
measurement. With merely 20.5mm,
the UF200 is the flattest ultrasonic
sensor for front mounting with a very
short blind range. With up to 2000mm
detection range, the UF200 is ideal for
applications that previously failed due
to insufficient installation space.
The key features and benefits of this
sensor have been acknowledged following
a recent AutomationsBest award and
another addition to Baumer’s ultrasonic
toolbox range which utilise NexSonic®
technology. To optimise engineering
freedom Baumer rethought the ultrasonic
concept and fully exploited what is
feasible in terms of electronic layout
and programmed algorithms.
The result of utilising NexSonic®
technology is an innovative sensor
design with specialised ASIC
(Application Specific Integrated Circuit)
and dynamic signal evaluation that
takes ultrasonic technology to the next
performance level. This ensures the
shortest blind range down to 10mm
and the fastest response times up to
10ms, helping to ensure best-in-class
performance. Add the smart filter
functions via IO-Link and the choice of
variable sonic cones (narrow, medium

UK Sets Out Plans to Change Sugar Tax
The UK government has called for consultation on proposals to widen the sugar
tax on soft drinks and include milk-based drinks.
The Soft Drinks Industry Levy,
introduced in 2018 as an obesity
measure, could expand to cover drinks
with a lower sugar content and include
milk-based and milk-substitute drinks,
which had thus far been exempt.
The consultation lays out proposals
“to build on the SDIL’s success in
incentivising soft drinks producers to
reduce sugar content”, the HM Revenue
& Customs and HM Treasury said in a
joint statement.
The proposals are: to reduce the
minimum sugar content for SDIL to apply
at 18p per litre from 5-7.9g per 100ml
to 4g-7.9g per 100ml; to remove the
exemption for milk-based drinks while
introducing a ‘lactose allowance’ which
does not penalise natural sugars from
milk; and to remove the exemption for
milk substitute drinks with ‘added sugars’
beyond those sugars derived from the
principal ingredient such as oats or rice.
At present drinks with a sugar
content of 8g or more sugar per 100ml
are charged at the higher rate of 24p
per litre.
In a statement, The Food and Drink
Federation said, “Food and drink
manufacturers are facing a series of
inflationary pressures and government
must continue to create the right
conditions for businesses to innovate
and also be clear about their long-term
goals to promote business confidence.
A predictable regulatory environment is
vital to ensuring our sector can continue
to invest in developing healthier options.”
